Our members
Membership of Orpheus is between 30 and 35. Being such a small choir we look for singers of a high standard who are either good sight-readers or quick learners, with a willingness to study the music independently at home. We rely on members to attend as many rehearsals as possible, especially when we are singing in multiple voices, and it helps if you are fairly confident and not afraid of singing a part with just one or two others.
There are no formal auditions: new members generally come along by invitation or after they have heard us perform and we see how we work together after a couple of rehearsals. The musical director will hold reviews at intervals to make sure that everyone is singing within the most appropriate vocal range. There may not always be a vacancy, in which case applicants could be asked if they are willing to have their details kept on a waiting list.
Members are often given the opportunity to sing solo items, either as part of a larger work or a short piece in one of our mixed programmes, and occasionally we perform in collaboration with other local music groups such as the North Herts Guild of Singers or the Stevenage Symphony Orchestra.
If you feel that this is a choir you could be happy in, please get in touch via the 'Contact us' button (under the 'About Us' menu) or the email icon at the top of the page.
